The first of a year’s abundance of dandelionsis this single kernel of bright yellowdropped on our path by the sun, sensingthat we might need some marker to help usfind our way through life, to find a pathover the snow-flattened grass that wasblade by blade unbending into green,on a morning early in April, this happeningjust at the moment I thought we were lostand I’d stopped to look around, hopingto see something I recognized. And thereit was, a commonplace dandelion, rightat my feet, the first to bloom, especiallyyellow, as if pleased to have been the one,

chosen from all the others, to show us the way.
